Climbing takes a leap forward in Mallorca with the first climbing walls approved for competition

Clubs will be able to use the facilities free of charge until June

28/02/2026

PalmMallorca now boasts its first officially approved public climbing walls for regional, national, and international competitions. The Sant Ferran sports center today inaugurated two new facilities—one for speed climbing and one for lead climbing—which will expand the island's climbing offerings, previously primarily limited to private initiatives. The event included an exhibition by elite athlete Erik Noya and a demonstration by young Mallorcan climbers from the Balearic Mountain and Climbing Federation's training program.

The new walls are 15 meters high. The difficulty wall has a seven-meter overhang, while the speed wall has a five-degree incline. The design allows them to be used simultaneously without visual or technical interference, facilitating both training and competitions. The day concluded with a masterclass given by Noya and an open house. From March to June, Mallorcan climbing clubs can request free use of the facilities for training. Currently, there are around one hundred registered clubs on the island, which, until now, were forced to compete elsewhere due to a lack of certified climbing areas. The inauguration was led by the President of the Council of Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, accompanied by the Second Vice President and Councilor for the Environment, Rural Affairs, and Sports, Pedro Bestard. Other institutional representatives and members of the climbing community were also in attendance.

As Galmés pointed out, the new infrastructure represents a clear commitment to promoting climbing as a local sport and opening Mallorca up to hosting competitions. In this regard, Bestard emphasized that it is the first climbing facility in Mallorca certified for its height and only the second publicly owned one in Spain with these technical specifications.
