Aena workers at Menorca airport threaten a strike on August 15th bridge
The works council denounces a reduction in workers while passenger traffic and Aena's profits have not stopped growing
PalmaAena's works council at Menorca airport has warned that it does not rule out calling a strike during the August 15th long weekend if management maintains its stance and does not open negotiations to strengthen the workforce. The mobilization comes after reporting that the increase in passengers and operations in recent years has not been accompanied by an increase in staff.
According to the committee, the workforce has gone from 216 workers in 2011 to 190 in 2026, while the number of passengers has grown from 2.5 to over 4.2 million annually and commercial operations have also increased significantly. Workers' representatives assure that this situation causes a high workload in areas such as Operations, Engineering, and Services and warn of the risk of collapse in groups such as signalers, maintenance technicians, and administrative staff, among others.
The workers also recalled that the airport increases its profits year after year. If in 2022, after covid, it obtained a net profit of 901.5 million euros, compared to losses of 474 million in 2021, in 2025 net profits were 2,136.7 million euros, 10.5% higher than the profit of 24.21. In February 2026, Aena announced an investment of 170 million euros at Menorca airport.
Furthermore, they denounce a lack of dialogue with management, the imposition of changes in working conditions, the obligation to work overtime, and an "abusive" use of the collective agreement in covering services. They also criticize that fixed-term discontinuous workers cannot access replacement contracts before temporary staff.
For this reason, the committee has called a demonstration this Tuesday in front of the departures terminal of Menorca airport to demand an adequate workforce and a "quality" public airport service. Workers' representatives assure that the future of the conflict will depend on Aena's response, but they warn that if there are no advances, "we cannot rule out a strike on the August 15th long weekend."
