Unemployment rises in the Balearic Islands in August despite there being 26,872 more affiliates than a year ago
The number of unemployed increases by 3.3% compared to July, with 25,706 people without work, while affiliation reaches 693,812 people
PalmaThe number of registered unemployed people in the Balearic Islands reached 25,706 during the month of August, 262 fewer than the same month last year, according to data published this Wednesday by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy. In year-on-year terms, unemployment has fallen by 1%.
However, the comparison with the previous month shows an increase in unemployment. Compared to July, the Balearic Islands have registered 824 more unemployed people, an increase of 3.3%, in the middle of the peak tourist season.
Regarding affiliation to Social Security, the Archipelago closed August with 693,812 affiliations, 26,872 more than a year ago, a 4% increase. In relation to July, however, 226 fewer affiliations were registered, a decrease of 0.03%.
14,588 women and 11,118 men
Of the total unemployed people in the Balearic Islands, 14,588 are women and 11,118 are men.
Regarding foreign workers, the number of unemployed people has reached 5,737, 19.4% more than in August 2025. This is 931 more people than a year ago. Compared to July, the increase is 276 people, 5%.
Of the 5,737 unemployed foreigners, 1,661 come from other European Union countries and 4,076 are non-EU.
31,339 contracts during August
Businesses in the Balearic Islands registered 31,339 contracts during August, 5,138 more than the same month last year, an increase of 19.6%.
However, compared to July, hiring has fallen by 34.5%, with 16,483 fewer contracts.
Of the contracts signed in August, 19,597 were permanent, 3,411 more than a year ago, a 21% increase. Compared to July, however, 13,187 fewer were signed, a decrease of 40.2%.
Temporary contracts numbered 11,742, 17.2% more than in August 2025, with 1,727 more contracts. In relation to July, there were 3,296 fewer, a decrease of 21.9%.
579,716 affiliates in the general regime
By regimes, the bulk of affiliations corresponds to the general regime, with 579,716 workers. Self-employed workers add up to 110,124 affiliations.
The special maritime regime has 3,971 affiliated members, while the agricultural regime exceeds 3,000, with 3,022. The special system for domestic employees registers 9,332 affiliations.
34.2 million in unemployment benefits
The latest available data on benefits corresponds to the month of July. That month there were 25,637 beneficiaries of unemployment benefits in the Balearic Islands.
Of these, 16,273 were receiving a contributory benefit, 9,361 were receiving a subsidy, and three were beneficiaries of the active insertion income.
Spending on unemployment benefits reached 34.2 million euros during July. The average amount of the benefit received per beneficiary stood at 1,092.7 euros.
