Controversy over some "unlicensed" works at the Charterhouse of Valldemossa

ARCA ensures that it is unaware if the actions have the necessary permits and demands the intervention of the Council and the City Council

PalmaThe conservationist entity ARCA has denounced works at the Charterhouse of Valldemossa which, as experts in the heritage of the complex warn, would not respect the necessary conservation criteria. The entity has observed that two openings recently made in the wall of the Murteres cloister have been widened to install wooden doors.

According to ARCA, the interventions affect the upper surfaces of the wall, below the oculi. Furthermore, the entity suspects that works could also be taking place inside the private chapels corresponding to these spaces, due to the noises heard there. ARCA states that it does not know if the actions have the necessary permits and archaeological supervision.

The entity also questions the design of the installed doors, which it considers alien to the style of the original ones in the cloister and to the Majorcan monastic tradition. Furthermore, it maintains that the new doors do not seem to respect the dimensions of the other openings in the cloister.

The Charterhouse is declared a Property of Cultural Interest (BIC) and combines private properties with spaces linked to the Bishopric, a situation that, according to ARCA, does not exempt it from complying with heritage protection regulations.

For this reason, the entity asks the Council of Mallorca to supervise the works and stop them if necessary. It also demands that the Valldemossa City Council halt them, since, as ARCA states, they do not have a municipal license.
