Open House Palma will open Son Busquets and around sixty other buildings at the 5th edition of the festival
Between November 10 and 16, Palma will host a new edition of Open House, the festival that invites citizens to rediscover their urban heritage through guided tours, workshops and days of reflection on the city.
PalmThe former Son Busquets barracks, currently undergoing renovation, will be one of the highlights of this fifth edition of the Open House Palma festival, which will hold its open house on the weekend of November 15th and 16th. However, the program will begin on Monday the 10th, with diverse activities designed to bring architecture "to those who are not architects," as the organizers describe it. Throughout the week, heritage, design, and urban planning enthusiasts can participate in talks, workshops, and tours of different neighborhoods in the city, such as Son Gotleu, Cala Major, and El Amanecer, among others, with the aim of including areas further from the historic center in discussions about growth and development.
The open house events will allow visitors to explore some sixty public and private buildings that usually have restricted access, such as the convent-residence of the Little Sisters of the Poor on General Riera Street, Casa Este and Casa Oeste—two contemporary private residences in Son Vida—and Villa Bonet. Also featured are emblematic sites like the Portopí lighthouse, one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world, the Coliseo Balear, and the Casa Encarnación Viñas-Josep Maria Llompart, where the poet and cultural activist lived, whose birth centenary is being celebrated this year.
Open House Palma, part of the international network Open House Worldwide—present in more than sixty cities—maintains the spirit of "opening the city and knowledge to all," promoting citizen participation and collaboration between residents, professionals, and local organizations.
Architecture and mental health
One of this year's new features will be the series 'Spaces that Care, People Who Inhabit Them,' organized by the General Directorate of Mental Health of the Ministry of Health, which will take place on November 12 and 13 at the Buenos Aires Health Park (former Psychiatric Hospital). The sessions will address how the design of spaces can influence emotional well-being and contribute to the recovery of people with mental health problems. In addition, the open house program will include a selection of buildings related to health and well-being, both historically and currently.
