That's how it was and that's not...

Pere Sánchez (according to his sister, Neus Sánchez): “He went to all the afternoon galas at Tito's”

Neus Sánchez, the journalist's sister, tells us the best-kept secrets of her childhood and adolescence

PalmHe was a wonderful child, a perfect child: he never lied, he was calm and polite, everything went well for him, he was happy. When he was scolded, very occasionally, he would refer to himself in the third person, we are told. He was born when his mother was 20 and his father 23, and they say that they would take him to the disco and the baby would remain peacefully dozing in his stroller. He ate well, studied and got good grades, he was quite good at soccer (which has been his passion and obsession all his life) and he enjoys playing the piano. Being a journalist was one of his childhood dreams and, almost without realizing it, he must be celebrating twenty years in the profession. He is Pedro Sánchez (Palma, 1985) and his sister, Neus Sánchez, who is seven years younger than him, tells us about him.

She says they're like night and day: "If they were expecting another Peter from me, they were wrong, because I was Satan: I wouldn't eat, I cried… Even my brother would tell my mother, 'My sister makes me nervous.' He was fed up with me." However: "There were fights, and there still are: over the last piece of potato omelet, or the morning croissants…" There was noise all the time.

Food, however, is something the two brothers hold dear: "At home, my mother cooks very well, and we were the tasters of her dishes: we especially remember her soups, and a Baltic dish with béchamel sauce, potatoes, and chicken. And something Pere loves is chestnut cake." However, it won't be the journalist who goes to the bakery to buy it: Pedro is one of those who prefers to find the surprise on the table (and argue with his sister over the last piece!).

You can't talk about Pere Sánchez's childhood without considering his obsession with football, which he inherited from his father; who, incidentally, worked for many years at RCE Mallorca and, therefore, raised Mallorca fans. Thus, they have shared many great moments with Mallorca, such as the 2003 Copa del Rey final in Elche, when Pedro was 18 and Neus was 11. Their level of fandom, however, goes far beyond the joy of a goal or a trophy: "When they were building Mallorca's new stadium, he was always there." Each with their own slice of the pie.

Music has also been a passion of Pedro's; he learned to play the piano as a child and, according to Neus, composed songs between high school and university. However, he was very focused on his studies, which were always very important to him: "When I was little, I saw a lot of myself in him, especially because I wanted to get the same grades. Pedro has always been an excellent student: they say he never had the "blessing" phase. He was a well-mannered child, a good student, without any complications." At 16, Pedro went to all the afternoon galas at Tito's, while in his room, The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, and Coldplay played.

As is often the case in the best of families, one sibling is from their father and the other from their mother. Pedro is his mother's: "They're discreet, with a subtle and deliberate sense of humor. The kind who say few things, but say them well." Nothing like her and her father, who are "much more sloppy and eccentric." Nieves continues describing Pedro: "He's a sensitive, discreet, very intelligent, and very funny person. All of this is great, but this sensitivity has also led him to experience extreme situations." Be that as it may, after everything they've been through, says Neus, "we've proven to each other that we're there for each other through thick and thin, and that we're truly a team."
