The 16th Mountain Film Festival opens

This new edition will offer the screening of 20 films

PalmPalma's Teatro Principal hosted the opening ceremony of the 16th edition of the Palma 2025 Mountain Film Festival, with the presence of Guillem Ginard, Island Director of Culture for the Mallorca Council, and Bartomeu Tomàs, Festival Director.

The Sala Grande of the Teatro Principal was packed to the rafters to officially open this new edition, which will feature the screening of 20 films (12 of which are short films in competition), conferences and discussions, and 16 guests, including Silvia Vidal, climber and ice axe holder for Jean Michel Jorda, film director, and Óscar Gogorza, journalist forThe Country, specializing in mountains and mountaineering.

As for the short film competition, three awards will be given this year: the Balearic Mountaineering and Climbing Federation Award (for best mountain film), the Kenia Outdoor Award (for best nature and ethnography film), and the Colonya Award for best film, voted on by the public.

The feature documentary was screened at this Wednesday's session Sophie Lavaud, The final submission, from director François Damilano. After climbing thirteen of the highest mountains on Earth, protagonist Sophie Lavaud finds herself just one peak away from the Himalayan Grand Slam. The film immerses us in the peculiar world of high-altitude mountaineering, where climbers must walk the fine line between daring and self-preservation. The documentary is the gripping story of Sophie's final challenge, a 40-day expedition filled with setbacks.
