Educació requests that schools provide the Spanish version of the 4th grade registration form to respond to the School for All initiative.
The letter is signed by the head of the Education Inspectorate, Gabriel Timoner. Schools must submit the document by October 7.
PalmThe Ministry of Education has asked schools to provide the Spanish version of the registration form for the fourth year of Early Childhood Education, the stage in which the primary language of instruction is chosen. This request is part of a response to a request for access to public information submitted by the Spanish-speaking platform Escuela de Todos, which He has always accused the centers of manipulating families to prevent them from opting for school in Spanish..
The request reached the schools through a letter signed by the head of Education Inspection, Gabriel Timoner, to which ARA Baleares had access through several school principals, who expressed concern about the possible motivations behind this question.
The letter reads: "In order to respond to the request for access to public information submitted by the organization Escuela de Todos, which refers to 'data on the 4th grade enrollment process,' we ask that you send a PDF copy (Spanish version) of the June 2025 enrollment form." Schools must submit the document by October 7.
Majority support for the school in Catalan
It should be noted that this year, 80.52% of families with children starting their fourth year of Early Childhood Education in publicly funded schools have chosen Catalan as their primary language of instruction, three percentage points less than in the 2024-2025 academic year. The remaining 19.48% have opted for Spanish. In absolute terms, this represents 6,458 registrations in Catalan and 1,563 in Spanish.
This was the first year in which the registration process could be carried out online, which facilitated the collection and processing of data by the Administration. The breakdown by island shows significant differences between territories:
- Majorca: 82.78% of families (5,268) have chosen Catalan, while 17.26% (1,098) have chosen Spanish.
- Ibiza and Formentera: 60.34% of the registrations (630) correspond to Catalan, and 39.66% (414) to Spanish.
- Minorca: 91.6% of families (560) have opted for Catalan, while only 8.35% (51) have opted for Spanish.
The Teachers' Assembly denounces the subjugation of education to extremist groups.
The group expressed outrage at the Education Inspectorate's request, which, at the request of Escuela de Todos, is demanding that schools enroll in Spanish for 4th year of Preschool, "while Catalan is declining in the classrooms and the schools' real problems are worsening," they denounce in a press release.
"If it is already outrageous that the Inspectorate, instead of ensuring compliance with the school's language projects, as has been repeatedly requested by both us and numerous entities in the education community, wastes time making these types of requests, it is even more outrageous that, at the request of Escuela de Todos, it is making public information that this entity has presented," they lament.
In this regard, they point out that "it is evident that Escuela de Todos has not been able to report any specific case of non-compliance with the regulations regarding enrollment in any school in the Balearic Islands." "Their demand for registration forms must be understood within their strategy, which corresponds to that of a highly ideologized group that does not seek justice, but rather to create a stir on an issue on which there is a high level of social consensus," they point out.
"We must not forget that for this academic year, families were able to register online without having to go to the schools," the Assembly recalls. Finally, the entity points out that it sees the use of Catalan within the centers decline day by day, "we suffer from a lack of personnel to meet the high number of educational needs, with obsolete infrastructure, a lack of teachers in some specialties, etc. The Ministry of Education demonstrates submission to extremist groups and the politicization of the school from the most reactionary positions.
