Education proposes a paid sabbatical year for teachers with more than 15 years of experience

The mechanism would consist of a progressive reduction of salary over four years, followed by a fifth year in which the teacher would be exempt from service but would continue to receive their remuneration

PalmaThe Department of Education has put on the table a new measure that would allow teachers to take a paid break from their professional careers, popularly known as a 'sabbatical year' after a period of progressive salary reduction over four courses. The proposal, presented today to the Sectoral Table of Education chaired by counselor Antoni Vera, has been received by the unions, which will analyze it before the next meeting. The meeting was also attended by the Director General of Teaching Staff and Concerted Centers, Joana Maria Cabrer, and the Director General of Educational Planning and Management, Catalina Ginart.

The initiative is part of the 2023 Framework Agreement, signed with the Left-Wing Pact Government, and provides that career civil servants with at least 15 years of teaching experience can opt for a partially paid leave system. The mechanism would consist of a progressive salary reduction over four years, followed by a fifth year in which the teacher would be exempt from service, but would continue to receive their salary. According to the Ministry, the measure aims to offer a path for rest and recognition of the teaching staff's career, while maintaining their connection with the educational system.

Increase in the tutoring supplement

The Sectoral Committee has also unanimously approved an improvement to the economic tutoring allowance. This will increase from the current 37.27 euros per month to 60 euros. The new amount will be paid in full to all tutors, including those who work part-time or with reduced hours, arguing that they maintain the same tutoring functions. Currently, the system has 6,660 tutors in the Balearic Islands, 58 of whom work part-time and 203 with partial reductions. The measure will come into effect in the 2026-2027 academic year and will have retroactive effects from September 2025, subject to budgetary availability. The estimated cost is 2.5 million euros per year.

Finally, the regulation of substitutions in the management teams of educational centers has also been unanimously approved. When a teacher temporarily assumes the direction of a center, they will be formally appointed and will receive the corresponding allowance. This allowance will range from 107 euros per month in small Early Childhood and Primary Education centers to 861 euros in institutes with greater organizational complexity.
