The UIB prohibits smoking on campus terraces

PalmThe Governing Council of the UIB has approved a new regulation that prohibits smoking on the terraces of the cafeterias in its buildings. The measure is part of institutional strategies to promote well-being and reduce risk factors among the university community, with the aim of consolidating safer and healthier spaces. The initiative was presented this Friday, April 24, at an event on the UIB campus attended by the Vice-Rector for Social and Cultural Projection, Adrià Muntaner, and the president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer in the Balearic Islands, José Reyes.

The announcement is part of the UIB Healthy Week, which will culminate on Sunday the 26th with the UIB-CampusEsport Race for Science. The event is jointly organized by the University of the Balearic Islands, CampusEsport, the Spanish Association Against Cancer in the Balearic Islands, and Yes With Cancer, and this year it has the collaboration of the Ministry of Health, the sponsorship of the FAN Mallorca shopping center, and various collaborating companies.

The proceeds from the race will be entirely allocated to the oncological physical exercise project promoted by the Spanish Association Against Cancer at the CampusEsport facilities. This is an extra-hospital program that promotes physical activity as a tool for prevention and rehabilitation for people with cancer, with the aim of improving their quality of life.

"Terraces without smoke"

The new regulation expands protection against exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, considered a carcinogen, and also includes the prohibition of the consumption of electronic nicotine delivery devices and oral tobacco on university terraces. The decision aligns with current state and regional regulations on public health, as well as with European Union recommendations on smoke-free environments. It also responds to the objectives of the Comprehensive Plan for Smoking Prevention and Control 2024-2027 and the Comprehensive Plan for Addictions of the Balearic Islands 2025-2032.

According to the UIB, the measure will reduce involuntary exposure to smoke and promote healthier lifestyles. All terraces will have to be signposted to ensure effective compliance with the regulations. With this regulation, the institution reinforces its commitment to public health and to the creation of exemplary university environments in terms of coexistence, sustainability, and well-being.
