Palm"Schools that wish to can continue to teach everything in Catalan." This is how the Minister of Education, Antoni Vera, summarized the impact that the amendment to the Balearic Education Law (LEIB) to introduce the vehicular use of Spanish will have on schools. This Monday, Vox registered the amendment to the text in Parliament. In a statement, the party warned that "this is only the beginning." "We will reverse every single law that allows for language imposition like the one we suffer in the Balearic Islands." Despite Vox's aspirations, in a conversation with ARA Baleares, Vera sent a message of calm to schools, assuring them that neither the Minimum Decree, nor the Language Normalization Law, nor the underlying content of the LEIB would be touched.

The amendment to the law proposed by Vox establishes that "a multilingual system be established in schools with the Castilian language as its backbone, along with Catalan, as the islands' own languages." In this sense, it modifies Article 135 of the Education Law, which currently states that "the Catalan language will be the language of teaching and learning used for at least half of school hours, to guarantee the achievement of the objectives of linguistic normalization."

Education guarantees linguistic projects

In the Spanish language, Vox defines it as the "language of teaching and learning" that "may also be used by decision of each educational center through the approval of its language project, especially when deemed necessary to guarantee full and equivalent communicative competence in both official languages." With Vox's modification, the regulation establishes that "Spanish and Catalan will be the languages of teaching and learning," and both "will be used in a balanced and equal proportion" in language projects. "The conditions for the use of languages in educational centers will be developed in accordance with a bilingualism marked by the co-official status of both languages," it continues.

The minister addressed Vox's legislative approach in an interview with IB3: "We reached a budget agreement with Vox, and those agreements should be reflected. We are people of our word," he stated, although he noted that the school's language projects do not need to change. "All the schools' language projects continue as they are," he insisted.
