Controlled demolition of the New Factory of Sóller begins
La Fábrica Nueva is the only textile factory in Mallorca that retains its original structure and machinery.
PalmEmergency works are beginning today at the Fábrica Nueva de Sóller to ensure the building's safety and halt years of deterioration. The ultimate goal is to transform this listed Building of Cultural Interest (BIC) into the Textile Museum of Mallorca.
The president of the Consell, Llorenç Galmés, the vice president of Culture, Antònia Roca, and other authorities have visited the site to learn about the scope of the interventions. The works include the controlled dismantling of unstable elements and the consolidation of the walls, especially of volume 3, which is at risk of collapse. The Fábrica Nueva (New Factory) is the only textile factory in Mallorca that retains its original structure and machinery, a testament to the social and economic history of 20th-century Sóller. Its acquisition by the Consell de Mallorca in 2025 was key to preventing the irreparable loss of the island's industrial heritage. The project foresees an investment of 9.2 million euros and includes the renovation of the building, the restoration of machinery, the museography, and cultural activities. The future Textile Museum aims to be a space open to the public, uniting past and future and telling the story of Mallorca's textile industry.
