The PSIB reproaches Lafuente that the developers are asking to build apartments without water

PalmaThe real estate developers of the Islands have requested that the Urban Planning Law be modified to allow construction even if the water supply is not formally guaranteed. At a time of water resource scarcity, PSIB deputy Amanda Fernández questioned the Minister of the Sea and the Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, on this issue. During the control session in Parliament, the minister avoided taking a stance on this topic, but insisted that water availability is one thing, and the legal processing of it is another. "They neither do it themselves nor let others do it," he retorted to the PSIB in statements reported by Europa Press.

The Proinba Association aspires for the Balearic Islands' Urban Planning Law to be modified to facilitate the processing of real estate projects even if the water supply is not approved. The document arrives after developers have encountered difficulties in moving forward projects that aim to address the housing emergency. "In Mallorca, with water shortages and cuts, developers want to develop urbanizations without having water guaranteed for the people who will live there," said Fernández. "First, bricks and profits, and then we'll see if the people and the natural resources there are sufficient," the deputy continued.

Lafuente pointed out that the Government is working to guarantee access to housing while also guaranteeing water resources. "They neither act nor let others act: they put all the obstacles in the way so that there are no official protection houses, and all the obstacles in the way so that we do not have the physical resources," the minister reproached the PSIB.
