Green light for the old headquarters of Social Security in Manacor to be the new youth center
The building has more than 400 meters and is divided into three floors
PalmaThe Manacor City Council has approved by full council to make the definitive request to the Ministry of Social Security, so that the state cedes the property located at number 9 of Carrer Nou, very close to the center.
An administrative procedure before the space can become the new youth center of the city. In fact, the Manacor council has even agreed on the years of cession in exchange for a rehabilitation to leave the house in a condition to be used, after decades closed without any use.
The Social Security building has 427 square meters built and divided into three floors. “It is intended to become a stable public building”, explains the mayor Miquel Oliver “with rehearsal rooms, others for multipurpose use for workshops or educational leisure, audiovisuals” or spaces for the different youth entities of the municipality, among which is Xítxeros amb Empenta, which already in September 2024 visited the space together with some councilors of the government team.
The cession by the state would be for a period of 30 years, with the possibility of a subsequent extension if both parties agree. Direct purchase of the building is not contemplated, as it is within the catalog of Social Security and therefore, according to its regulations, it could not be disposed of.
Once the Ministry gives a positive response, the City Council would begin a period of comprehensive reform of the space, which although it has been abandoned for so many years, does not present structural problems. Yes, the council will have to allocate a significant budget: “we have calculated that the rent of another similar building for all these years would cost and it is worth it for us”, added Oliver. Among other things, tasks of insulation of certain rooms or the installation of an elevator or fire prevention measures will have to be carried out.
Councilor Júlia Acosta has thanked the young people for “all the waiting time” without having a youth center (the last one was Espai Na Camel·la and it did not work as expected), “it is an important step of justice”.
It is also known that during the morning hours the new center will have a more institutional function, as the headquarters of the municipal Youth service and with tasks of dynamization of the space. While in the afternoons it will be managed in a self-managed way by the different collectives that wish to be actively involved.
