PalmThe case of the baby found dead in a dumpster in Portocristo in November 2023 has reached a verdict. The jury at the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands unanimously found the mother and her brother-in-law guilty of the infant's death. According to the court, both acted knowing the baby had been born alive and yet decided to abandon him in a dumpster without seeking any assistance. The jury concluded that this decision was made with the intention of causing his death. The events took place after a birth inside a vehicle, in which the mother's sister and brother-in-law were also traveling. The newborn was subsequently thrown into a dumpster on a street in Portocristo. A witness alerted the local police, who took the baby to a hospital, where his death was confirmed. The third defendant, the mother's sister, was found guilty of failing to provide assistance, as the jury determined that she was aware of the baby's extremely dangerous situation and did nothing, even though she could have. Following the verdict, the prosecution maintains its request for life imprisonment with the possibility of parole for the mother and her brother-in-law for murder with the aggravating circumstance of kinship. The final decision on sentencing will rest with the judge, who will issue the sentence in the coming days. The session was marked by the absence of the main defendant, who did not appear for the reading of the verdict. In response, the judge issued an arrest warrant for her. Meanwhile, the brother-in-law was remanded in custody after the hearing held this Sunday.
