Joana Maria Socias, professor of Law and vice-dean of the UIB, dies
The professor of Administrative Law had dedicated her career to teaching, research in urban planning and tourism, and she was also part of the Government between 2007 and 2011
PalmaThe vice-dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and professor of Administrative Law, Joana Maria Socias, died this Saturday, as reported by the University. The university community and the rector, Jaume Carot, have expressed their condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the professor.
A law graduate in 1993 and a doctor from the UIB in 1998, Socias began her teaching career at the Balearic Islands Hospitality School before joining the University as an assistant professor in 1996. In 2000, she obtained the position of tenured professor of Administrative Law and, since 2025, had been a professor of this discipline. She held the position of vice-dean of the Faculty of Law since 2013.
Her research activity focused mainly on territorial planning, urbanism, tourism, and the environment, as well as other areas of public law, such as public services, housing, and tourist rentals. Throughout her career, she published numerous scientific articles and several specialized works.
Beyond the University, between 2007 and 2011, she was the Director General of Relations with Parliament and Regulatory Coordination of the Ministry of the Presidency of the Government, where she also served as Secretary General. At the UIB, she also directed the Master's Degree in Advocacy and Prosecution.
The President of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol, also expressed her condolences for the death of Socias and conveyed her support to the jurist's family and closest relatives.
