The storm rages against Ibiza

PalmaThe storm that has been hovering over the Balearic Islands since this Wednesday has lashed out this Thursday afternoon on the island of Ibiza, where it has left numerous incidents throughout its geography. Aemet has warned that, in addition to the showers, the instability structure could have caused very strong wind gusts, initially between 70 to 90 km/h, and regarding precipitation, more than 50 mm could accumulate in one hour.

In Sant Antoni, the storm has overflowed along the promenade with a 'rissaga' (meteotsunami) that has filled the street and various pedestrian areas with water, as can be seen in the video from Meteo de les Illes Balears that heads this news story.

The SEIB 112 has sent the ES-Alert notice, the emergency mobile phone alert system, to the citizens of Ibiza and Formentera, and has asked families who have the possibility to pick up children from educational centers in Ibiza and Formentera to do so. The Emergency service has taken this preventative measure in the face of the episode of intense rain that has affected the Pityusic Islands.

According to Meteo de les Illes, part of the storm system could move to Mallorca and, in fact, storms are occurring in the area of Esporles, Valldemossa and Puigpunyent, where it is raining moderately.

The storms that affected the Balearic Islands early this morning have left significant precipitation records, especially in Mallorca. The maximum was reached at the Son Torrella station, in Escorca, with 73.6 liters per square meter, while 59 l/m² have accumulated in Binissalem.

Data from the Balearic territorial center of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) indicate that, in the case of Binissalem, a large part of the precipitation has been especially intense and has been concentrated in a short time: 51.8 l/m² have fallen in just one hour.

The record at Son Torrella, in the Serra de Tramuntana, is the highest of the episode so far. In Lluc, 54.6 l/m² have been collected, while in Llucmajor, 34.2 l/m² have been recorded.

In the rest of Mallorca, Aemet data also show notable accumulations. At the Canova station, in sa Pobla, 23.6 l/m² have been recorded; at Son Sant Joan airport, 22.9 l/m², and at the Llucmajor radar, 21.8 l/m².

19 incidents due to bad weather

The 112 Emergency Coordination Center has recorded 19 incidents related to the bad weather of the last few hours in the Balearic Islands, 16 of which were in Mallorca.

Between 1 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. this Thursday, Emergency Services notified five incidents related to heavy rainfall in Palma, two in Binissalem, and two more in Inca. In Ibiza, one was recorded.

Among the managed alerts, there were three floods in establishments or buildings, three tree falls on the road, three incidents involving obstacles or liquids on the roads, and two floods on public roads.

The 112 also handled alerts for spills or leaks in buildings or establishments, in addition to one traffic incident, one sighting of agricultural smoke, one forest fire, and the detachment of an urban element.

Two of the 19 incidents occurred on Wednesday afternoon and had already been included in the report that the Director General of Emergencies provided last night. As of 8 a.m. this Thursday, the 112 only had one open incident.

The rain continues

While Ibiza and Formentera maintain the orange alert for intense rain and storms, which may be accompanied by strong gusts of wind and hail, in Mallorca the alert level is yellow.

In Mallorca, the alert forecasts rainfall of up to 20 liters per square meter in one hour, in addition to coastal phenomena.

The evolution of the episode during this Thursday will depend on the persistence of the storms, with special attention to the Pityusic Islands, where the orange alert level is maintained.
