A man dies drowned in front of Espalmador after jumping into the sea with a red flag

The victim threw himself into the sea to recover an object that had fallen into the water and was located unconscious minutes later by another boat.

FormenteraA 65-year-old man of American nationality died this Thursday after drowning off the island of Espalmador, in Formentera, after jumping into the sea despite the red flag flying due to the sea state.

According to the Guardia Civil, the man was sailing with his wife and daughter on board a vessel anchored off Espalmador when the daughter lost an object in the water. The victim jumped into the sea to try to retrieve it, but after a few minutes, his relatives lost sight of him.

The man was found floating by the occupant of another recreational boat, who rescued him from the water and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers while alerting emergency services.

The alert was received around 12:25 p.m. The lifeguards from the Consell de Formentera continued the resuscitation maneuvers during the transfer to the port of La Savina, but they could not save his life.

The Guardia Civil has taken charge of the investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident and has activated the usual protocol in these cases.
