PalmaThe Palma City Council has activated a preventive measure to evacuate settlements located in flood-prone areas due to the risk of torrential rain associated with DANA Adam. The council has enabled the Germans Escales sports center, in Son Gotleu, as a shelter space for the affected people.

The operation focuses especially on settlements located near torrents and in areas at risk of flooding, such as the surroundings of La Riera and the na Bàrbara torrent. The measure was activated on Sunday due to the forecast of intense rainfall during the early morning and the danger that the flow of the torrents might increase.

Yesterday evening, 22 people had been assisted at the Germans Escales sports center, where provisional beds were installed to accommodate them. Among the people living in these settlements are families with minors.

A device for flood risk

The device is part of the preventive measures activated by the Palma City Council ahead of the arrival of the DANA. The mayor, Jaime Martínez, participated on Sunday in the meeting of the Municipal Civil Protection Commission and the technical advisory committee of the Municipal Territorial Emergency Plan (PlaterPalma), in coordination with the Government and the rest of the involved organizations.

In addition to the evictions, the council ordered the preventive closure of municipal parks and gardens and the Passeig de Sagrera, and suspended the activity of municipal facilities, in-person attention at citizen offices, and sports activities and outdoor events scheduled for Monday.

The authorities have recommended avoiding unnecessary travel, not approaching streams or crossing flooded areas, and following the instructions of the emergency services.
