Sa Pobla rises up against the train that will cross the Marjal

Residents have called for a rally on the 3rd in the town's main square to protest against the railway project.

PalmThe civic platform "Save Sa Marjal" has called for a rally tomorrow, Thursday the 3rd, in the Plaza Mayor of Sa Pobla to protest against the layout of the new train line that will reach Alcudia. The project is to replace the railway project with a tram, "since it would destroy less land and its impact would be less." The goal is to "preserve all the properties and land" possible. The platform is calling for public transport that is "as non-aggressive as possible." "For hundreds of years." As a short-term alternative, they propose increasing the frequency of buses between Sa Pobla and Alcudia. "The land," they add.

The Sa Pobla-Alcudia line is the second expansion project for the Mallorca Railway Services (SFM) network announced by the regional government, following the start of the process last year to extend the train from Palma to Llucmajor.

The project also includes the construction of five car parks at Sa Pobla station and the other four at different points in Alcudia—and will provide connections to the TIB intercity bus network. It will also have a park-and-ride car park to promote intermodality.

Regarding the route, the line from Sa Pobla to Alcudia will have a total length of 17.1 kilometers, five of which will be for a tunnel beneath the hills of Son Fe and Sant Martí, an option that does not affect the Albufera Natural Park.

The remainder of the 12.1-kilometer route will be open-air: a 7.6-kilometer section by train and a 4.5-kilometer section by tram, upon arrival in Alcudia.

The route will continue to a station called Alcudia, which will connect to the historic center via a new civic road, and will end in front of the maritime station. The train from Sa Pobla is expected to arrive in 13 minutes at the first stop in Alcudia, on Avenida del Tucà, and to complete the journey to the commercial port in 24 minutes.
