PalmThe Manacor Local Police have issued an instruction to ensure that Catalan becomes the general and preferred language of use in all administrative communications and in serving the public, recalling current regulations.

The measure, promoted by the Delegate for the Interior, Sebastià Llodrà, aims to ensure compliance with current regulations, consolidate Catalan as the language of the municipal administration, and strengthen its effective presence in the daily work of the police force.

The instruction is based on the Language Normalization Regulations of the Manacor City Council, as well as the regional decree on the use of official languages in the Balearic Islands. These texts establish that Catalan must be the habitual working language and the main tool of communication between the Administration and the population. The City Council emphasizes that, beyond the legal framework, the initiative aims to advance the full normalization of the language and set an example as a public institution.

Thus, it is established that all reports, emails, circulars, notifications, and internal administrative documents must be written in Catalan as the usual working language. In-person, telephone, and online contact with citizens will always begin in Catalan. However, please note that any citizen who requests assistance will be provided in Spanish, thus respecting legally recognized linguistic rights.

Public forms and materials: printed materials, posters, brochures, notices, and forms used by the body must be written, at a minimum, in Catalan. Communications addressed to judicial bodies located in the Balearic Islands—or within the Catalan-speaking area—will also have to be issued in Catalan. City Council sources reiterate that the instruction is not restrictive, but rather seeks to expand the effective use of Catalan while guaranteeing the rights of Spanish speakers. "The initiative is based on a simple principle: always start in Catalan and, if the citizen requests it, continue in Spanish as normal," municipal sources emphasize.

Linguistic monitoring and advice

The City Council announces that the Language Policy Department will actively monitor compliance with the instruction and will periodically remind police officers of its contents. To facilitate its implementation, the Municipal Language Service is available to the Local Police to offer document correction, ongoing linguistic advice, and support in cases of doubts and specific needs. According to the Department of the Interior, this technical support should allow for simple and rapid adaptation, avoiding uncertainties and guaranteeing the linguistic quality of the texts.

With this measure, Manacor City Council reiterates its commitment to the normalization of Catalan as an axis of social cohesion and as the natural language of the Administration. The City Council maintains that the use of Catalan guarantees equal opportunities and the right of citizens to interact with institutions in the language of the territory. The instruction, signed last Tuesday, must be known and applied by all personnel of the Manacor Local Police Department.
