Lloret concludes its 100th anniversary of independence with an exhibition and study sessions
The exhibition 'Documents on municipal independence' is open to the public in Lloret de Vistalegre, coinciding with the patron saint's day.
LloretThe exhibitionDocuments concerning municipal independence It is an exhibition that has opened to the public in Lloret de Vistalegre, coinciding with the feast day of Our Lady of Loreto, one of the most important dates on the local calendar. The exhibition, curated by Bartomeu Martínez, who has been in charge of the local archives, and Montse Cueto – former Justice of the Peace of the town – offers a journey through the first years of the new town council's existence after its separation from Sineu. As explained by the exhibition's coordinator and councilor, Toni Gomila, the documents on display cover the period between 1925 and 1935 and allow visitors to see "the first administrative steps of a newly formed municipality." These include all the documentation for creating the first coat of arms, as well as other documents such as congratulatory letters from other town councils at the time of independence, and even a friendly message of congratulations from the rector of Porreres.
Documentation on the first municipal commissions, birth and death records, and other curiosities help us understand how the local administration of Lloret de Vistalegre began to take shape a century ago. But there are also curiosities that have certainly earned their place on display: a letter from the mayor of Palma sent to the mayor of Lloret de Mar that ended up in Lloret de Vistalegre; a 50-peseta grant to cyclist Josep Nicolau to ride in the Volta a Catalunya. Or how we know that the City Council acquired two typewriters, the first in 1932 and the second, which was exhibited in the 1959 show.
The exhibition is complemented by the Consell de Mallorca's traveling exhibition on the island's various archives, which helps to contextualize the local documentary heritage within the island. At the event's presentation, the Councilor for Culture, Toni Oliver, explained how this exhibition aims to highlight the documentary legacy held in the municipal archive. He also took the opportunity to thank Martínez and Cueto for their work in preparing all the documentation.
Also, to bring to a close a year of events commemorating the town's centenary, Lloret de Vistalegre will host the 3rd Local Studies Conference on Friday and Saturday, December 12th and 13th. This event will bring together researchers and residents to review key episodes in the town's history. The conference will open on Friday afternoon with various presentations on Lloret's independence process, the formation of the municipal boundaries, and education during the Second Republic, as well as the purge of teachers between 1936 and 1943 and the first female mayor of Mallorca, Magdalena Cifre Cerdà, among other topics. On Saturday morning, the presentations will focus on the Civil War and the repression, with cases such as that of the teacher Joan Abrines Pons, and on the town's Catholic associations during the first half of the 20th century. There will also be other interesting topics to explore the life, history, and society of Lloret. Cyclist Josep Nicolau and the legendary Bernat Corredor are among the speakers who will be featured at this third edition of the Lloret Local Studies Conference.
