Vox accuses Prohens of not building in transition areas due to "fear" of the elections
Cañadas warns that he will summon the Housing Minister to give explanations
PalmA new clash has erupted between Vox and the PP, this time over housing. During the government question time, the spokesperson for the far-right party, Manuela Cañadas, accused President Marga Prohens of refusing to implement the law and allow construction in transition zones (gray areas between urban and rural land) due to her "fear" of the left-wing elections and the arrival of the PP. Cañadas went so far as to reveal the private meetings in which both parties negotiated the law and warned that from now on, "they'll have to bring a recorder so that there's a record of what is said and agreed upon." According to parliamentary sources, immediately after the confrontation in the chamber, the president went to her office and met with the Speaker of Parliament and provincial leader of Vox, Gabriel Le Senne. Prohens acted this way after Cañadas announced that she would demand the appearance of the Housing Minister, José Luis Mateo, to explain his handling of the situation. "Faced with an unprecedented housing emergency, we urge your government to enable construction in transitional areas," he insisted. "You haven't done so because you don't want problems before the elections, but we cannot afford to paralyze it just so you'll be afraid." In this regard, Cañadas criticized the fact that PP-governed municipalities have not yet "enabled" these areas.
Prohens responded to Cañadas that she is "not afraid of anything" and reminded him that the Law on Strategic Residential Projects leaves its implementation in the hands of the municipalities. "The least you could do is familiarize yourself with the law," she retorted, noting that it passed with Vox's support: "The Government respects the autonomy of the municipalities." In this regard, she pointed out that municipalities can use transition zones for construction, but first they must have exhausted all available urban or developable land, or justify their need for it. She then urged Cañadas to ask his party in Palma why they are "against developing these zones."
