A new way to explain the Islands

PalmaFor years it was repeated that Catalan had difficulties finding space in digital environments. That young people were abandoning the language on social media. That the internet led to cultural and linguistic standardization. The data published by ARA Balears paints a much more hopeful picture. Not because the challenges have disappeared, but because they show that a new generation has decided to occupy this space naturally.

The ecosystem of content creators in Catalan from the Balearic Islands has reached a significant dimension. Between 2024 and 2025 alone, views grew by approximately 250%, there are already about 1,200 active projects publishing around 450 daily contents. We came from an almost testimonial presence, and that's why the bot is so relevant. It is the consolidation of a community that has found on digital platforms how to explain itself and explain the Balearic Islands.

The most interesting thing, however, is not just the quantity, but the type of content that proliferates. Many of these creators talk about territory, language, agriculture, the housing crisis, saturation, and daily life in the Balearic Islands. They do so from their own experience, with the codes of their generation and with a living, spontaneous, and uninhibited Catalan. They connect with their immediate environment because they know that this authenticity sets them apart. The data also suggests that local content in Catalan has an audience, and that giving it up does not always guarantee reaching further.

Naturally, this new communicative sphere cannot replace journalism or cultural institutions. Content creators are not subject to the same verification standards or responsibilities as the media, and the influence they wield can also contribute, at times, to amplifying misinformation and simplistic discourse. It would be naive to ignore this reality. But it would also be a mistake to focus only on this side of the phenomenon. Among the thousands of videos, podcasts, and publications produced from the Islands each week, there is an extraordinary capacity to spark curiosity, generate debate, and strengthen ties with the language and territory. It is a cultural production adapted to the channels that today are consumed mainly by the youngest, and this is a value that goes beyond entertainment.

If institutions considered the survival of Catalan strategic, they should also start seeing this ecosystem as an investment in the future. It is not about subsidizing any content, but about facilitating the growth of talent. The best generational renewal of Catalan may not only be happening in classrooms and on stages, but also in front of a mobile phone. And the most relevant thing is that it does so by talking about the Islands and for the Islands.
