No to war: either we defend life or we become accomplices

There are moments when silence is not prudence but complicity. Moments when looking the other way is not neutrality but surrender. And this is one of those moments.

The war driven by Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu is neither inevitable nor justifiable. It is an illegal, unjust, and profoundly immoral war. A war that responds to a dangerous conception of the world: one that imposes force over law, that replaces diplomacy with bombs, that disregards human life in the name of geopolitical interests.

We have seen this before. In 2003, with the Iraq war, lies were constructed to justify an invasion. Today, fake news, lies, are being used again. But the reality is the same: behind these wars there are no human rights, there is power, interests, and business.

Faced with this, the Spanish government has been clear. It has condemned the war, defended international law, and opted for the diplomatic and humanitarian path. This is the position of a mature democracy: one of firmness with principles.

But while the war is discussed in global terms, its consequences are already very present at home. Because every bomb that falls, every destroyed city, every broken family, translates into people forced to flee, to migrate. Today's wars are tomorrow's migrations.

And these migrations also reach Europe. They also reach Spain. And yes, they also reach the Balearic Islands.

That is why it is essential to say it plainly: one cannot criminalize migration while remaining silent about the wars that cause it. One cannot build walls in the Mediterranean while tolerating destruction on the other side.

In this context, the role of the Government of the Balearic Islands is particularly worrying. The Popular Party, led by Marga Prohens, has opted for silence or calculated ambiguity in the face of flagrant human rights violations.

But this silence is not harmless; this silence legitimizes the 'war mongers,' it legitimizes Vox.

And it is even more serious when this silence occurs within the framework of agreements with Vox. Because it is not just about governing: it is about which discourses are normalized and which boundaries are decided to be crossed.

When we tolerate the dehumanization of the suffering of war victims – even children – we are not facing a political disagreement. We are facing a moral failure.

Today, the Balearic PP has chosen the path of the convenience of power over the coherence of principles.

Saying “no to war” is not just a stance of international justice. It is also a stance on what kind of society we want to be here. A society that defends human rights without nuance. That understands that real security is built with justice, not with bombs. That does not turn its back on those who suffer.

Because behind every person who flees, who migrates, there is a story of survival. Behind every migrant person, a life cut short by political decisions made far away, but with consequences very close by.

And in the face of this, there are no possible equidistances.

There is only one dignified option: to defend peace, human rights, and the dignity of all people.

Loud and clear: no to war.
