Ginard demands "seriousness" after the lifting of the veto on airport co-management
The island minister of Tourism accuses the PSOE of defending degrowth in Mallorca while the State forecasts that Son Sant Joan will gain two million passengers by 2031
PalmaThe island Minister of Tourism, Guillem Ginard, accuses the PSOE of defending containment in Mallorca and growth in Madrid. After ARA Balears reported this Tuesday the lifting of the veto by the Bureau of the Congress of Deputies on the processing of the Bill for airport co-management approved by the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, Ginard has called for “seriousness” and an in-depth debate on the future of the airport and the tourism model of Mallorca. "We are talking about the island's main economic engine. They cannot ask us to contain tourist activity and listen to the people while the State works in the opposite direction," he warned.
Ginard has assured that the veto proposed by the state executive had generated "great concern" in the Council of Mallorca because it could prevent the institutions of the Islands from having "a minimum capacity for decision-making" regarding Palma airport, the main gateway for visitors to Mallorca.
The island Minister of Tourism considers that the withdrawal responds to the fact that the PSOE did not have a guaranteed majority to maintain the blockade. "Faced with the imminence of a lost vote, they withdrew the veto directly so it would not be so evident that they did not have the support of their partners in Sumar," he stated.
The island minister has also linked this debate to Aena's forecasts, which point out that Palma airport could reach nearly 36 million annual passengers by the end of this period, about two million more than the 33.8 million registered in 2025.
For Ginard, these forecasts reveal "a very big contradiction" in the socialist discourse. "We have a left, and especially a Socialist Party, that participates in demonstrations against mass tourism and demands a decrease in places, but, at the same time, the PSOE in Madrid foresees investments that will allow an increase in the number of tourists and passengers passing through our airport," he criticized.
According to the minister, this policy makes it difficult for the institutions of Mallorca to respond to the social demand to contain tourist activity. "On one hand they ask us for containment and, on the other, they promote an increase in passengers," he insisted.
