PalmThe Inca City Council established the Municipal Council for Democratic Memory this Tuesday, the first body of its kind created in the Balearic Islands. This initiative follows the approval of the Municipal Ordinance on Democratic Memory, which establishes the regulatory framework for promoting public policies of truth, justice, reparation, and guarantees of non-repetition. The inaugural meeting took place on February 24, a date laden with symbolism, coinciding with the anniversary of the execution of former Inca mayor Antoni Mateu Ferrer. The commemoration included historical context provided by the city's official chronicler, Miquel Pieras, who read Mateu Ferrer's farewell letter written before his execution, a particularly moving moment that served to highlight the human dimension of the repression and the need to preserve collective memory.

The mayor of Inca, Virgilio Moreno, highlighted the pioneering nature of the initiative: "With the establishment of this Council, we are taking a firm and courageous step. Inca is once again at the forefront of democratic memory policies in the Balearic Islands. It is not just about remembering the past, but about honoring the victims and restoring their dignity." For her part, the Councilor for Democratic Memory, Alice Weber, emphasized the importance of the chosen date. "That this Council was established on the very day of Antoni Mateu Ferrer's execution reminds us that memory is not abstract: it has names and surnames, it has families, it has stories that we cannot allow to fall into oblivion," she stressed. "This Council is the result of dialogue and a shared commitment with various organizations. Democratic memory can only be built through participation, by listening to the voices of civil society and working in a coordinated manner," Weber also noted. The new Municipal Council is established as a space for participation, dialogue, and consultation, comprised of institutional representatives and representatives from memorial, cultural, and social organizations working in the field of recovering democratic memory. The implementation of this body will allow for the planning of future actions regarding signage for memorial sites, outreach activities, and educational projects, positioning Inca as a leader in the recovery and dissemination of historical memory.
