Let's do it in Catalan warns: the Consell de Menorca is about to eliminate the Catalan requirement

PalmaThe association Fem-ho en Català has accused the Consell de Menorca of eliminating the requirement to know Catalan to access professional careers. The entity dedicated to the defense of Catalan has presented allegations against the initial approval of the island institution's new horizontal professional career regulation.

Fem-ho en Català has warned that the second transitional provision has been eliminated and, therefore, the requirement to know Catalan to progress professionally. "If successful, this new regulation would violate the public function laws of the Balearic Islands and linguistic capacity measures," they warn. In its allegations, the entity has argued that an internal regulation cannot suspend laws of a higher rank.

Furthermore, it has criticized the attempt to establish an "indefinite" moratorium until the future approval of the job description when the Consell's catalog already sets the required linguistic levels since 2022, which vary depending on the type of position and are "fair and equitable."

According to the entity, granting this exception "creates a permanent privilege that infringes upon the principles of equality, merit, and ability, and that harms the rest of the workers and the linguistic rights of the citizenry."

With all this, the association has requested the plenary session of the Consell de Menorca to suppress this provision for incurring "defects of nullity by full right." Regarding the rest of the articles, Fem-ho a Catlà has decided not to take a position and, therefore, not to oppose its continuation of processing.
