MORE accuses the PP of protecting vulture funds and promoting, even more, real estate speculation
The eco-sovereignist party denounces that the Omnibus Law will allow companies and investment funds to acquire housing at a set price and demands that they continue to be reserved exclusively for habitual residence
PalmaMÉS per Palma denounces that the Partit Popular government in Cort has decided to open the door to companies and investment funds being able to buy subsidized housing. This decision, in their opinion, turns protected housing into "a new business for large speculators and directly harms the citizens of Palma". As they detailed at a press conference, until now, this subsidized housing was reserved for families who needed a home to live in.
With this change, promoted by the PP within the Omnibus Law, companies and investment funds with much higher economic capacity will also be able to access them. Faced with this situation, the eco-sovereigntist party denounces that this means that "young people and families will have to compete with large financial operators to access one of the few homes that still maintained more affordable prices". "It is a scandal and an injustice. Protected housing is for people to live in, not for vulture funds to do business", affirmed the spokesperson for MÉS per Palma, Neus Truyol.
Protected housing must be for citizens, not for speculators
However, MÉS per Palma demands the immediate withdrawal of this measure and calls for the subsidized housing to remain exclusively reserved for habitual residence. "Mayor Martínez and President Prohens are rolling out the red carpet for vulture funds to profit from housing that should guarantee a basic right," denounced Truyol. In fact, the ecosovereignist spokesperson for Cort remarked that "it is incomprehensible that in the midst of a housing crisis, the PP decides to favor those who speculate instead of those who need a home".
MÉS per Palma warns that, as a consequence of this decision, residents will have fewer opportunities, large investors will be able to do more business, and there will be greater concentration of property in a few hands. "The PP demands that any neighbor, in order to access any of these flats, must not own any other dwelling, must allocate it as their usual and permanent residence, be registered in the Public Register of Applicants, and justify limited income. How is it possible that at the same time it allows vulture funds to buy price-controlled housing?", Truyol asked.
"It is clear that investment funds are not citizens with a need for access to housing. Not only will they not live there, but they also have no payroll to justify. This contradiction shows that what the PP is doing is emptying protected housing of meaning and turning a tool designed to guarantee rights into a new business opportunity for speculators. They are on the verge of prevarication", he lamented.
The PP governs for speculators, not for the people of Palma
For MÉS per Palma, this decision is a new demonstration of the policies promoted by Mayor Martínez and the Popular Party. The eco-sovereigntist spokesperson believes that "the PP has taken a very serious step backwards on housing by allowing vulture funds to access protected housing. It is further increasing the real estate bubble. It is a frontal attack on the right to housing".
"Every protected dwelling that ends up in the hands of an investment fund is a lost opportunity for a family in Palma. The city does not need to give more privileges to vulture funds, but rather to guarantee the rights of the people of Palma," concluded Truyol.
