Jaime Martínez convenes a rally for territorial integrity: "What happened in Ceuta must serve as a warning"

PalmaThe mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, has invited citizens to participate in a rally in Plaça de Cort next Wednesday, September 2nd (at 8:00 PM), coinciding with Ceuta Day, in solidarity with the autonomous city and to "defend the territorial integrity" of Spain. The same square that just a month ago was saturated with events and that prevented the outdoor dinner organized by Brunzzit from being held normally, has been denounced by Podem. The City Council has thus joined the call from the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces to rally in front of city halls as a show of solidarity with Ceuta. Martínez pointed out that "what is happening in Ceuta concerns everyone" and that it "must serve as a warning" to the Islands, as he highlighted in a video published on Instagram.

From Podem, councilwoman Lucía Muñoz has censured the "double standard" in the use of Plaça de Cort and has accused the mayor of instrumentalizing an institutional call to serve his political discourse. "Plaça de Cort is not his, it belongs to everyone. Just a month ago it was too saturated with events for citizens to have Brunzzit's outdoor dinner there, and now, on the other hand, there is no problem in calling a rally there that the mayor takes advantage of to engage in partisan politics," Muñoz denounced.

"What has changed in just one month? If Cort was saturated, it should be regardless of who convenes. What the mayor cannot do is apply certain criteria to citizen entities and others when the act serves him to develop his own political discourse," he pointed out.

Muñoz also criticized Martínez for taking advantage of an institutional call for solidarity with Ceuta to attack the Spanish government and link the events that occurred in the autonomous city with the arrival of migrants to the Islands.

In the video, collected by Europa Press, Martínez says that in the last 15 months, "more than 11,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in rafts" in the Balearic Islands, which "leads to an unmanageable pressure on public resources and services." Along these lines, he criticized that “Pedro Sánchez's immigration policies do not address the problems” of the Islands. Likewise, he urged the people of Palma and Mallorca to "show solidarity" with Ceuta, because, as he considered, the president of the government, Pedro Sánchez, and his ministers "are turning their backs" on the city. The mayor demanded from the social network to the state government that it "dedicate all necessary resources to defend the territorial integrity and sovereignty" of Spain and "provide the necessary security to all citizens of Ceuta".

Martínez has highlighted that "Sánchez must stop looking the other way" and has criticized the "negligence" of the president and the rest of the state executive. In this regard, he has called for “a staunch defense of the rights of the people of Ceuta”. "Now is the time to defend, without a doubt, Ceuta and its people, because defending Ceuta is defending our integrity", he concluded.

The Balearic PP has encouraged the citizens of the Islands to participate in the concentration in front of the Palma City Council and in those that are convened in front of the town halls of other municipalities as a sign of support for Ceuta. The general secretary of the PP in the Balearic Islands, Sandra Fernández, has invited participation because "Ceuta is part of Spain and what affects the people of Ceuta" concerns "everyone".

Fernández has maintained that these concentrations must serve "to make solidarity visible" and "to convey a message of unity and support to Ceuta" to demonstrate that the Balearic Islands "are on the side of the people of Ceuta". "From Palma and from every municipality in the Balearic Islands that joins this call, we want to convey our closeness, our affection and our support", concluded Fernández.
