Prohens does not foresee "under any circumstances" early elections in the Balearic Islands.
The political context in the Islands is different from that of Extremadura, the Government and Vox point out, referring to the early elections in this region.
PalmThe government of Marga Prohens is not considering "under any circumstances" an early election and will run out the legislative term with the platform with which it won the elections, with the occasional external support of Vox, its natural partner, according to sources within the government who told EFE. They also assert that the situation in Extremadura, where President Maria Guardiola did bring forward the elections, cannot be compared to that of the Canary Islands, where Prohens approved the 2024 and 2025 budgets with the support of the far right.
At this point, the government is negotiating the approval of the 2026 spending ceiling, which takes place before the budget is processed. The aforementioned sources indicate that the relationship with Vox is good, despite differences in areas such as language policy. But bringing forward the elections has been on the table since the split with the PP that Vox's state leadership ordered in July 2024 for all autonomous regions where the PP needed the support of the far right—in coalition or externally.
With a minority government, Prohens wants to continue negotiating his initiatives one by one until the end of the term, both with Vox and the left-wing parties, although so far he has only reached significant agreements with the far right. The vice president of the Catalan government, Antoni Costa, stated a few days ago that bringing forward the elections would be "an exercise in opportunism" that is not justified because the PP has approved its main political reforms despite being in the minority.
For their part, Vox sources also pointed out that the political context in the Balearic Islands is not that of Extremadura. "Any scenario is good for us," they added, referring to polls that predict an increase in votes for the far-right party.
