Prohens speaks of overcrowding with Felipe VI and attributes the "uncontrolled growth" of tourism to Armengol

PalmaThe mass tourism has been one of the issues that President Marga Prohens has discussed this Friday with King Felipe VI, who has received the authorities of the Balearic Islands at the Royal Palace of Almudaina in Palma. "We mentioned that I understand the unease of part of the population with a tourist growth that in the last eight years was absolutely unrestrained: 115,000 places in eight years," said the president, who attributes the responsibility for the tourist saturation to the governments of Francina Armengol.

"For someone to try to make it seem like it started now is an insult to the intelligence of citizens, especially if it comes from the socialist party, the same one that manages Aena and votes against the airport co-management requested by the Government," she snapped in reference to the Spanish government. "We have talked about the transformation of the economic model," she explained in relation to Felipe VI: "We do not give up our main industry, but we are seeking containment measures, balance, prioritizing residents in certain services".

Prohens has given the details of the device that the Government has launched for the eclipse of August 12, which will be seen in a privileged way from the Islands, which the Executive faces as an ""emergency"" due to the scenes of saturation that this may generate. For this reason, Prohens has criticized the Spanish government for foreseeing the phenomenon as an opportunity to "attract more tourists".

In parallel, the head of the Executive referred to the challenge of demographic growth. "I have taken the opportunity to demand public and political attention to the public services of a community that has doubled its population since 2015," she explained, and noted that there is a high number of new students and new health cards. Regarding the housing crisis, she conveyed to the monarch the policies of "prioritizing residents' access to housing and public transport".

As every year, Prohens has conveyed to the king her concern about the migratory wave that has increased in recent years in the Balearic Islands, where a route from Algeria is consolidating, and especially regarding minors, whose well-being is the responsibility of the island councils. "We have more than 800 unaccompanied minors, a figure that exceeds any capacity and resources of the councils," criticized the president, who has positioned herself against the distribution of minors from the Canary Islands approved by the State.

"What have we done to Pedro Sánchez?"

Prohens has accused the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, of "punishing" the citizens of the Balearic Islands with the financing system, debt forgiveness, and railway infrastructure. "What have we done to him?", asked the president, who will meet the socialist next week. Nevertheless, she said she has no hope placed in the meeting and would settle for him "not sending a statement denying the content of the meeting" this year, in reference to the possibility of boosting Asian tourism that arose after her meeting at the Consulate. "I will ask him what I have been asking for three years at the conferences of presidents and in meetings both at the Consulate and at Moncloa: the fulfillment of a Balearic agenda that he knows, although I will deliver it to him again," she continued. She also announced that she will ask him again about the arrival of migrants in makeshift boats, given that the Consell de Formentera is "completely overwhelmed".

Le Senne is concerned about the 'grandchildren's law'

The President of the Parliament, Gabriel Le Senne, has expressed to Felipe VI his concern about the application of the 'grandchildren's law', the eighth additional provision of the Democratic Memory Law that facilitates obtaining Spanish nationality for descendants of those repressed in the Civil War.
