The Government launches a campaign against overcrowded flats

PalmaThe Government will inspect 74 subsidized housing buildings in the Balearic Islands until 2027 as part of a campaign to combat the overcrowding of apartments, substandard housing, and fraud in official protection housing. The Director General of Housing and Architecture, José Francisco Reynés, pointed out this Wednesday in a press conference that, specifically, inspections will be carried out on 60 developments in Mallorca, ten in the Pityusic Islands, and four in Menorca.

Reynés detailed that developments located in tourist municipalities will be visited as a priority during the tourist season, mainly to avoid illegal vacation offers. In these interventions, the verification of contracts, rental and sales prices, the requirements of the beneficiaries, or the compliance with communication of right of first refusal in case of sale will be checked. In addition, inspections are also planned for a minimum of ten limited-price homes already registered in the registry.

The director defended that, during the first six months of the year, 40 inspections have been carried out, more than in the previous five years. In total, since 2022, 120 homes have been inspected. Sanctions can be serious or very serious with fines of 3,000-30,000 euros depending on the severity.
