Prohens warns that they will have to expand Son Tous to accommodate more migrant minors

PalmaThe President of the Government, Marga Prohens, warned this Friday that it will be necessary to expand the Son Tous initial reception space to be able to attend to the unaccompanied migrant minors who continue to arrive in the Islands.

“No minor should be in these temporary facilities like the ones we have, and we will have to expand Son Tous to accommodate more minors arriving on our coasts,” Prohens stated in declarations to the media after participating in the meeting of the commission for the management of flood risk at the Consolat de Mar.

The president assured that she does not feel “pressured” by the Spanish government for the Balearic Islands to take in unaccompanied migrant minors from Ceuta. As she explained, the state executive “said it would not send minors to tense autonomous communities”.

In this sense, Prohens expressed confidence because she considers that the Balearic Islands “do not have the capacity” to take in more minors and expressed her trust that the Spanish Government “will maintain its criteria”.

“The situation already exceeds any limit”

Asked about the arrival of migrants this Friday in Formentera, the president assured that the island "has a problem with immigration" and that "the situation already exceeds any limit".

"It is a humanitarian drama, but it is also an economic, social and resource drama," she stated.

Prohens recalled that the management of unaccompanied migrant minors corresponds to the Consell de Formentera, but assured that the Balearic Government will support the island institution in the face of "lack of resources".

The president thus highlighted the pressure on reception resources as one of the main problems derived from the arrival of migrants to the Islands, especially at a time when Formentera continues to receive boats from North Africa.
