PSOE councilors demand urgent government measures to combat the housing crisis.
WSF Secretary General Amanda Fernández has focused on housing as the main social problem.
PalmThe Socialist councilors of Mallorca have demanded measures from the Government to address the housing crisis. They did so during the councilors' assembly of the Socialist Federation of Mallorca (FSM) held in Lloseta this Saturday.
In a press release, the PSIB-PSOE reported that the assembly includes 144 councilors from more than 40 municipalities on the island. At the meeting, the Secretary General of the FSM, Amanda Fernández, focused on the main social problem: access to housing and the policies of public administrations to facilitate the fulfillment of the constitutional mandate of guaranteeing decent housing to all citizens.
In this context, Fernández criticized the "inaction" of the PP government in the face of the excessive rise in housing prices in the Balearic Islands. "Since Marga Prohens became president, the price has increased by 30% and has become the highest in the entire state, with an average of 4,000 euros per square meter," denounced the Socialist leader, who complained about the PP's "inaction" in the face of this problem.
The Socialists have also criticized the "failure" of policies such as the "Secure Rent" program and warned that "15,000 rental contracts are pending renewal before the end of the year, which could leave many families homeless if the rent they pay increases."
Faced with this situation, the Socialist Federation of Mallorca has proposed "immediately" applying the state housing law and declaring areas under stress to limit rental prices. According to the Socialists, this measure "is already yielding positive results in Catalonia," while the PP is resisting implementing it in Mallorca.
The Socialists have also called for the reactivation of the construction of Publicly Protected Housing (VPO), the completion of projects initiated in the previous legislature, and the exercise of the right of first refusal and redemption to prioritize social housing.
The assembly served to share experiences between municipalities, with the example of a town like Santa Coloma de Gramenet, where, unlike in Mallorca, the rental price caps permitted by the State Housing Law are already applied. The Socialist mayor of the municipality, Mireia González, in conversation with Amanda Fernández, referred to some of the peculiarities of the municipality she governs, with 120,000 inhabitants living in a limited area of about four square kilometers, and with very significant social housing needs. González pointed to the strong commitment to housing rehabilitation policies to achieve improvements in the quality of life of citizens.
Network of elected women of Mallorca
During the assembly, the Socialists of Mallorca formed the PSIB-PSOE Women's Network in Mallorca to strengthen the role of feminism within public policies at all institutional levels.
Some 40 socialist women, both public and elected officials, signed the initial manifesto, which includes a commitment to promote collective and supportive leadership to recognize the work of pioneering women within political management and to support the work of women who serve and those who will access executive and management public positions.
