PalmaThe LGBTI rights organization Ben Amics demanded this Thursday the closure of the Gender Identity Clinic at Son Espases hospital for carrying out "systematic transphobic practices", as it has become "the main obstacle to starting the healthcare transition".
In a statement released this Thursday, the entity pointed out that it has been collecting various testimonies from those who have passed through this unit and who coincide in pointing out that at the first visit they are given informed consent and a 2010 protocol in the endocrinology area that speaks of "risks" at the start of hormonization and "gender identity disorders".
The LGTBI organization has criticized the "pathologizing terminology" used by Son Espases, among which also stand out expressions such as "male hormones" that can generate more "aggression", and also due to the fact that this unit treats "transsexuality as an illness".
"They are in breach of the law against LGTBIphobia"
Ben Amics believes that the practices carried out in this unit are in breach of the current law against LGTBIphobia, and has pointed out that the hospital uses "personality tests in psychological consultations and evaluations are carried out" in order to "detect and diagnose possible psychopathologies".
The organization has requested a meeting with the Ministry of Health to explain "the continued non-compliance" with the law and to request the closure of a unit that "has never adapted to a non-pathologizing accompaniment perspective".
It has recalled that the association provides accompaniment and going through the Gender Identity Consultation is not mandatory "to get an appointment with endocrinology".
Furthermore, Ben Amics has stated that trans people must be attended to psychologically like anyone else in the public health system, not "as if they had a pathology".
