The Consell de Mallorca will promote a study on the island's population carrying capacity

PalmThe plenary session of the Consell de Mallorca approved this Thursday to promote a study on the island's population carrying capacity with the aim of analyzing the impact of demographic growth on the territory, infrastructures, and public services. The proposal, presented by Coalición por Mallorca, was approved with the support of the majority of political groups, while the PSIB and Vox abstained.

The spokesperson for Coalición por Mallorca, Antoni Salas, defended the need to “plan the future with data and a long-term vision” and celebrated that the initiative has prospered. As he explained, the study should serve as a basis for guiding the Consell's strategic decisions on territorial and sustainability matters.

The proposal comes in a context of strong population growth in the Balearic Islands, especially over the last two decades. In Palma, the population has increased by 26% since 2005, with more than 93,000 new residents, reaching 484,039 inhabitants as of January 1, 2025. In parallel, the foreign population in Mallorca has also grown notably and already exceeds 206,000 people.

Salas has warned that Mallorca must continue to be “an habitable island”, with opportunities for young people and with public services capable of responding to the current reality. In this regard, the study aims to provide objective criteria to address demographic pressure on resources and facilities.

The debate took place within the framework of the plenary session following the General Policy Debate held on March 30, a session in which political groups present resolutions for the insular government to adopt or reject.
