The PSIB demands compensating for insularity in financing
Rosario Sánchez proposes introducing amendments to take into account the floating population, the rise in prices and the difficulties of access to housing
PalmaThe PSIB proposes that the new regional financing system take into account the insularity and the impact of mass tourism on the Balearic Islands. The socialists want to introduce amendments to compensate for the pressure exerted by the floating population and the effects on prices and the housing market. The reform is expected to be processed this autumn.
The proposal, as explained this Friday by the PSIB candidate for the Government for the 2027 elections, Rosario Sánchez, is the result of a consensus between the party, civil society, and the economic and social agents of the Islands.
Sánchez recalled that the new model already provides for an initial injection of 412 million euros for the Balearic Islands, an amount that, according to the PSIB, would allow the Islands to move from seventh to second place in the per capita distribution.
The PSIB demands to negotiate the debt cancellation
Another point that Sánchez has put on the table is the debt forgiveness of 1.742 billion euros for the Balearic Islands. The socialist candidate has reproached the Government of Marga Prohens for its "inaction" and its "unilateral position" regarding this issue.
Sánchez pointed out that other communities "have already sat down with the Government to negotiate" and criticized the Balearic PP for remaining "aligned with what Feijóo says". The Government, however, has defended that it rejects the new model because it considers that it does not incorporate the demands of the Balearic Islands, including insularity and the floating population.
The PSIB candidate has questioned that Prohens has already announced that she will vote against the reform. "We think this is an outrage, because these are many resources to provide public services to citizens," she stated.
Demands to review the insularity factor
The socialists also consider it "urgent" to review the insularity factor included in the special regime for the Balearic Islands. Sánchez recalled that, according to her data, since the approval of this instrument in 2023, the Islands have received 576 million euros from the State for investments related to insularity.
The socialist candidate has defended that in a community like the Balearic Islands, insularity "is everything" and has reproached the Government for still not having explained in detail what these resources have been invested in.
Sánchez finally accused Prohens' Executive of carrying out "a policy of confrontation" with the central government and demanded that the path of negotiation be recovered to improve the resources that the community receives.
