https://en.arabalears.cat/society/palma-invests-1-1-million-to-renew-the-lighting-and-sound-of-son-moix_1_5849928.html

The Palma City Council presented this Monday the modernization that the Municipal Sports Institute (IME) has carried out at the Son Moix Municipal Sports Palace. The interventions carried out there have involved the renovation of the lighting and sound systems of the pavilion and the swimming pool, to which must be added the comprehensive renovation of the removable parquet court, an action that was carried out during 2025. The total of these actions represents an investment of more than 1.1 million euros. One of the main actions has been the comprehensive renovation of the lighting of the main court of the Son Moix palace. The work, started last July 14th and concluded this September, has included the installation of new LED lighting and a new electrical infrastructure adapted so that sports competitions and television broadcasts can be held there. On the main court, a system consisting of 60 modular LED lights has been installed. The new installation also incorporates a control system, which allows for the configuration of different lighting scenes according to the needs of each activity. Likewise, a lighting system has been incorporated that allows the pavilion's atmosphere to be adapted to various types of events, from matches and sports competitions to presentations, institutional acts, and shows. The renovation has also allowed for the improvement of the lighting in the stands, through the installation of 24 new LED projectors. The lighting renovation works have been awarded to TECESA Acústica Visual S.L. and have involved an investment of 1,002,252 euros, VAT included.New sound system

Another of the renovations completed this month of September has been the renewal of the pavilion's sound system. Specifically, a new fixed sound system has been installed, adapted to the dimensions and characteristics of the venue, which improves the acoustic quality and ensures a more uniform distribution of sound in the different areas of the pavilion. The renovation of the sound system, awarded to NUNSYS S.A., has involved an investment of 67,852 euros, VAT included. The actions have also included the comprehensive renovation of the removable parquet court, an intervention that was carried out during 2025 and which was completed in October of the same year. It involved an investment of 90,306 euros and allowed for the improvement of safety conditions, sports performance, and the general quality of the facility.Renovation of the swimming pool lighting

The lighting modernization project has also been extended to the Son Moix swimming pool. The work was carried out between July 14 and 31, with the aim of minimizing the impact on facility users. The old system has been replaced by a new installation based on LED technology, which will allow for a reduction in energy consumption by more than 50% compared to the previous installation. This year, Son Moix turns 50, a milestone that coincides with an important process of renovation and modernization of the facilities, aimed at adapting the venue to current and future sporting needs.Authorities present

The event was presented by the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, who was accompanied by the first deputy mayor and councilor for Sports, Javier Bonet. Furthermore, representatives from the five clubs that carry out their activities at the palace and compete in top-level national categories attended: Azul Marino Palma, Illes Balears Palma Futsal, Club Voley Palma, Fibwi Palma and Palmer Basket Mallorca. Also present were the president of the Football Federation of the Balearic Islands, Jordi Horrach; the president of the Basketball Federation of the Balearic Islands, Juanjo Talens; and the president of the Volleyball Federation of the Balearic Islands, Pep Mas. On behalf of the Municipal Sports Institute (IME), the manager, Miguel Ángel Bennàssar, also attended.

Demonstrating with neo-Nazis

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/demonstrating-with-neo-nazis_129_5842268.html

A graphic example of what the expression ‘cringe’ means is to see your own institutional representatives walking the streets alongside far-right and neo-Nazi groups, in a demonstration where racist and hateful shouts are uttered, and where the preferred chant includes the expression ‘son of a bitch’, in this case directed at the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez. The President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, participated in a demonstration with these characteristics, and immediately afterwards she posted a funny tweet, because it explained another demonstration that had not happened. In the original version, President Prohens tweeted the following: “Ceuta is not alone. [Dramatic pause]. Thousands of us have taken to the streets to convey all our support to the people of Ceuta and to say loud and clear that Ceuta is not for negotiation and that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Spain are not for sale. [Dramatic pause]. We are all Ceuta”. The tweet did nothing more than reproduce the Partit Popular's talking points just as they had sent them from Madrid, which is the speech that President Prohens usually offers. This time, without translating it, or anything. Very well. It is a pity that reality has nothing to do with all of this. What is happening in Ceuta is a deep migratory, humanitarian, and political crisis, in which Spain's unity and territorial integrity have nothing to do with it, except for those who actually believe that the seventy thousand people who entered on July 30th and 31st from Morocco are an “invasion”. They must be Boabdil's troops, returning to reconquer Granada five hundred years later. What is happening in Ceuta, also, is a geopolitical conflict in which the main objective (of powers like Russia, Israel, or Trump's USA) is the destabilization of Europe, and in which the Spanish border is used to achieve it. The border and the Moroccan civilian population, with more than 140 dead and hundreds or thousands of people abandoned to their fate. The demonstration that President Prohens attended was not about any of that. It was a demonstration, by the way, in which the Police refrained from striking a single blow with a baton, despite the decidedly aggressive manners of many of the participants. The demonstration, in fact, should not be considered as such: the ‘demonstrations’ attended by the far right and neo-Nazis use one of the fundamental rights of democracy, which is the right to demonstrate, to make a public exhibition of brute force. An exercise in intimidation: shouts with insults, racist proclamations, and the demand to put an end to those considered “enemies of the fatherland” are nothing else. Fascism (which in Spain is cloaked in neo-Francoism) has always functioned in this way: seeking intimidation through hatred and brute force. The Popular Party no longer flirts or dallies with fascism, but has joined it definitively, has adopted its discourse as its own, and strives to whitewash and normalize it. President Prohens, as she has always done otherwise, obeys orders and, if she must let herself be photographed next to individuals with their arms raised in the Roman salute or next to individuals who exhibit the neo-Nazi imagery of groups like Plus Ultra, she does so. If anyone ever takes the trouble to remember Prohens' term (some idler with an interest in insignificant things will have to do it), these photos will look very bright in her biography.

The same square that just a month ago "was saturated with events" and that prevented the outdoor dinner organized by Brunzzit from being held normally, has been denounced by Podem. The City Council has thus joined the call by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces to gather in front of town halls as a show of solidarity with Ceuta. Martínez pointed out that "what is happening in Ceuta concerns everyone" and that it "must serve as a warning" to the Islands, as he highlighted in a video published on Instagram.

These are the files that are already moving through Palma City Council and are going through the long process of obtaining a permit. This is the great commitment of the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, which is still far from being a reality. Especially if the initial processing has to go through different controls, such as that of the General Directorate of Water Resources. Martínez and his team wanted at least "some cranes" building hundreds of homes within a year, as has been said in some PP meetings, convinced that it is necessary to show that action is being taken against the housing shortage.

The pact, reached this Friday, incorporates a new bonus linked to driving emergency vehicles, with the aim of recognizing the special conditions and risk associated with this function. Additionally, a special dedication bonus is added, intended to reflect the sustained increase in workload in recent years. On the other hand, the City Council has committed to studying the inclusion of weekends and holidays within the specific bonus. Overall, the City Council estimates that the implementation of the plan will have an impact of 10 million euros and could mean increases of more than 2,500 euros gross per month in bonuses. The agreement comes after the force's latest demonstration, in which a hundred officers walked the streets of the city while Cort maintained that there was a "firm proposal". Over the last four months, the unions had intensified protests against the mayor, Jaime Martínez, for failing to meet the commitment to approve the plan by January 1st.Tension reached a peak with internal changes in the City Council, when Llorenç Bauzà took over Public Function, replacing Mercedes Celeste, and the direction of the Local Police. After an initial meeting with Bauzà, now as the highest responsible for the areas involved in developing the plan, the unions considered that the change of personnel had been futile. "The plan remains blocked," they declared.the unions considered that the change of personnel had been futile. And now the international experts who have evaluated the project have answered it: “It is clear that Palma is not looking to increase the volume of cultural programming or attract more visitors, as in both cases they have enough [...] and even understanding the local circumstances and needs, the jury wonders if the title of European Capital of Culture is the best platform to advance the city's aspirations.” This is how the report, made public this Monday, concludes, with which the committee, chaired by Tanja Mlaker, argues the decision to discard Palma from the candidates to obtain the title for the year 2031.
