PalmaRepresentatives of 17 neighborhood and environmental organizations from Mallorca have promoted various initiatives against the imminent arrival of waste from the Pitiuses, including the establishment of a platform. As reported by GOB this Monday in a statement, the organizations have expressed their concern about the imminent arrival of this waste, stating that it could cause a risk of accidents and spills, in addition to bad smells and other nuisances.

As has been insisted upon, the waste will be transported in bulk and not in compacted bales. They also recalled that approximately 80,000 tons per year are being discussed for transport, insisting that Ibiza has a lower selective separation percentage, which would mean 35% more than has been communicated so far.

The transfer, moreover, will pose a risk of prematurely exhausting Mallorca's landfill, whose useful life will be reduced. They also add that it could cause a risk of collapse of Mallorca's safety deposit, since, with the preventive maintenance of two of the four incineration lines halted in January and February, there will not be enough capacity to treat Ibiza's waste and the transported garbage would consume 75% of Mallorca's safety reserve capacity.

The organizations have denounced a "fraud" in the reduction of the waste tariff in Mallorca, and recall that the 50 million subsidy from the Government represents "the distribution of costs" due to the failure of Ibiza's management. "This project burdens all the inhabitants of Mallorca with the mismanagement and failure of the Consell d'Eivissa," they insisted. GOB has informed the other organizations about the administrative dispute against the awarding of the waste transport service contract processed through a negotiated procedure without prior publication by the Consell d'Eivissa, a lawsuit that has been admitted for processing. However, the 17 organizations do not rule out carrying out further protest actions.
