Abandoning or giving up a dog in Manacor will no longer be free.

The amendment to the regulations, adapted to the 2023 state law on animal welfare, sets new fees for the collection and maintenance of abandoned or lost animals, a service that until now was entirely the responsibility of the City Council.

ManacorUntil now, abandoning or surrendering a pet in the municipality of Manacor was free of charge for the owner, and the collection and care of the animal were paid for exclusively by the City Council. Now, however, with the modification of the municipal ordinance, things are changing, and the responsible party will have to pay a series of fees. This week, the Manacor City Council approved an urgent update to the animal welfare ordinance, "which was outdated and did not reflect the real cost of the procedure," explains the Councilor for the Environment, Mateu Marcé.

If until now the current service for collecting, assisting, and housing lost and abandoned animals did not impose obligations on the offender and the burden fell on the administration, now citizens will have to face, for example, a fee of 495 euros "for the costs of keeping the dog for 4 years," says Marcé, who acknowledges that the current regulations were not adapted to the animal welfare law approved in 2023, which municipalities must now adopt.

According to the new regulations, the service for collecting and managing lost animals will cost 81.41 euros per service. This fee includes travel, capture, and the corresponding administrative management.

Regarding the Daily upkeep for dogs and cats is set at €5.50 per day. For goats, sheep, and pigs, the daily rate is €8.00, while the upkeep of horses and cattle is €18.00 per day, given their greater need for space, food, and specific care. In addition, surrendering dogs will cost €497.50 per service, a measure intended to promote responsible pet ownership and reduce abandonment. Responsibility in the cost

The City Council has emphasized that these fees aim to ensure the sustainability of the service by protecting and ensuring the well-being of the animals, as well as promoting responsible pet ownership. Currently, the City Council has a service concession agreement with the Mallorcan company Natura Parc. In fact, this past November it was renewed for a period of four years at a maximum cost of just over €848,000, which translates to more than €200,000 per year from municipal funds.
