Antonia closes her shop after 53 years in the heart of Arenal
Neighbors, customers and friends gather this Sunday to say goodbye to an emblematic space of local commerce
The ArenalAfter more than half a century in business, Antònia has decided to close her shop, a business that has witnessed the great changes Mallorca has undergone: from the countryside to mass tourism, from the tranquility of the first visitors to the current intensive tourist activity. At 82 years old, the shopkeeper brings to a close a chapter that has marked not only her life, but also the commercial history of the town.
Born and raised outside Manacor in the 1940s, Antònia grew up in rural Mallorca, where life revolved around family and working the land. This childhood gave her the perseverance and strength that have accompanied her throughout her life. When the first tourists arrived on the island, she sensed that Mallorca was changing and decided to open her business in El Arenal, then a nearly untouched beach, with few buildings and a burgeoning atmosphere.
There she opened the shop of souvenirs Isabel's shop quickly became a meeting place for neighbors, customers, and friends. It wasn't just a workplace, but a family haven where her children spent hours playing and helping out among the aisles filled with souvenirs and typical items.
Over the years, Antonia reinvented herself: about thirty years ago, she transformed the shop into a fashion boutique, adapting to changing times and new trends. She sourced suppliers from off the island, personally selected each collection, and turned the shop into a space of quality and personalized service. The sales representatives who visited often became friends and part of the community she helped to create.
Throughout its 52 years, the shop has experienced periods of expansion but also hardship: economic crises, robberies, and even a fire that tested its resilience. However, Antonia has never lost her vitality or good humor, and has always shown great affection for those who have worked alongside her, especially her daughter-in-law Marga and the saleswomen Sole and Mónica, who are considered part of the family.
To celebrate the closure and say goodbye to the store, an open party will be held in front of the shop this Sunday, November 16th, at 11:00 AM, featuring a traditional fritter. The event brings together former staff, customers, friends, and neighbors, who will share memories and express their gratitude for so many years of dedication and camaraderie.
With this closure, Antònia leaves behind not only a business, but also a part of the living history of Arenal and Mallorca. Those who know her highlight her strength, perseverance, and approachability, qualities that have transformed the shop into a vibrant space and are believed to have endured long after the counter closes this month.
