They vandalize the sculpture of Aurora Picornell in El Molinar with Nazi graffiti
Memoria de Mallorca has filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office and the Deputy Prosecutor for Democratic Memory of the Balearic Islands.
PalmThe sculpture in homage to Aurora Picornell, located on the Paseo del Molinar, has been vandalized again with Nazi graffitiThis has been denounced by the Memoria de Mallorca Association, an organization whose objectives include safeguarding the rights, dignity, and memory of the victims of Franco's regime in Mallorca.
The entity considers that these events affect the memory of the victims of the Civil War and the Franco regime, specifically that ofAurora Picornell Femenias who, along with four other women, the Rojas del Molinar, was the victim of forced disappearance and subsequent murder on January 5, 1937, acts that constitute serious violations of human rights.
For all these reasons, Memoria de Mallorca has filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office of the Balearic Islands and the Deputy Prosecutor for Human Rights and Democratic Memory of the Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands, requesting that the appropriate investigation be initiated into the reported events and that the perpetrators be identified in order to determine the current situation.
The president of the organization, Maria Antònia Oliver, explained that "an attack on the memory of the victims and on human rights cannot be allowed." "We cannot allow the rights of everyone to be violated, and therefore we will continue to speak out wherever necessary and demand truth, justice, reparation, guarantees of non-repetition, and memory," she exclaimed.
In 2021, this bust was the victim of another vandalism. The figure appeared in the morning with blue graffiti. In addition, the plaque indicating Picornell's affiliation with the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) and the neighborhood's seamstresses' union, as well as her feminist commitment, was removed.
Picornell's sculpture was inaugurated in March 2019. The inauguration ceremony marked the beginning of the Year of Aurora Picornell. El Molinar, where her bust was located, was the neighborhood of this activist, who was murdered by fascism at just 26 years old.
Picornell lived in a working-class, left-wing environment. Known as the Mallorcan Passionflower, along with the Reds of Molinar, she was arrested and shot in January 1937. The words Picornell wrote on March 8, 1934, were present at the tribute: "Against murderous fascism! Against the capitalist regime! Against the capitalist regime! Salary!"
