Brussels approves 750,000 euros in aid to Balearic farmers for fuel
The subsidies will be ten cents per liter and will compensate for the additional cost registered between March and June due to the crisis in the Middle East
PalmaThe European Commission authorized this Wednesday a 750,000 euro aid program to compensate farmers in the Balearic Islands for the rise in fuel prices following the crisis in the Middle East. The subsidies will be direct, at ten cents per liter, and will cover the additional costs incurred between March 1 and June 30, 2026.
The program is aimed at companies engaged in primary agricultural production in the Islands and will extend until December 31 of this year. The objective is to alleviate the impact of the fuel price hike on the farms.
Brussels' authorization allows for the application of this aid scheme in accordance with European competition rules. The Commission's statement, however, does not specify the schedule or the procedure for farmers to apply for them.
Temporary support for farms
The Commission has examined the program within the temporary framework for aid approved on April 29 to respond to the economic effects of the crisis in the Middle East. This mechanism allows member states to provide support to certain activities affected by the situation.
In its evaluation, Brussels considers that the aid is necessary, appropriate and proportionate. It also concludes that the program has a defined budget, offers temporary support to agricultural companies and does not distort commercial exchanges in a way contrary to the common interest.
The non-confidential version of the decision will be published in the European state aid register under reference number SA.124823.
