PalmaThe Calvià Lifeguard Union has called a strike for this Sunday, August 23, to protest the City Council's "disregard" for their demands to improve the service and working conditions. This pressure measure, which the union has considered "drastic," comes after "receiving nothing but mistreatment" when they tried to negotiate an improvement in the conditions of the municipality's lifeguard service.

The lifeguards have publicly denounced some service deficiencies, such as the fact that there are watchtowers that show "deterioration that prevents the normal development" of their professional activity or the insufficient extension of the service, both throughout the year and on each of the days.

They have also criticized the "completely precarious and insufficient" bathing accessibility service for people with reduced mobility, present on four of the eleven beaches in the municipality; communication errors, which force them to activate emergency mechanisms from mobile phones; and "systematic errors" in the payment of workers' wages.

After the announcement of the strike, which took place last Tuesday, the City Council criticized the "irresponsibility" of the workers for planning it on one of the weekends when more visitors are expected on the municipality's beaches.

The City Council representatives conveyed to the lifeguards their willingness to "study and adopt" the improvements proposed in the occupational risk report prepared by the company awarded the service, most of which are "mere recommendations" on issues such as strengthening security and improving working conditions.

In any case, the Council has stated that any improvements in the lifeguards' salary conditions, an issue "underlying the demands," must be resolved with the awarded company and not with the administration.
