A campaign teaches how to act when finding a sea turtle
The initiative, presented with the release of a recovered specimen at the Marine Fauna Recovery Centre, aims to involve residents and tourists in the protection of the species
PalmaThe release of Nura, a sea turtle that has spent several months recovering at the Palma Aquarium Marine Fauna Recovery Centre, served this Wednesday to present the 'Aquí Salvam Tortugues' campaign, an initiative that aims to raise awareness about how to act when an specimen or nest is found on the coast.
The campaign, promoted by the Oceanogràfic Foundation and developed in the Balearic Islands by the Palma Aquarium Foundation, reminds us that the first step is to immediately alert 112. It also insists that it is necessary to maintain distance and avoid any action that could disturb the animal, such as touching it, approaching it, or using flashes or lights, especially if it is a female in the process of laying eggs.
With the aim of reaching both residents and visitors during the nesting season, information panels will be installed on beaches, promenades, and other public spaces. The initiative already has the participation of several municipalities on the Spanish coast. In the Balearic Islands, Palma, Muro, Capdepera, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Sant Joan de Labritja, Maó, and Formentera have joined.
The presentation also included an educational activity with the children from the Palma Aquarium Summer Campus, who participated in a talk about the conservation of marine turtles and the protocol to follow when finding an specimen or a nest.
