Check if you will see the August 12 eclipse from your home
The Horizon Eclipse 2026 application allows you to check if the sun will be visible at the point from where you want to follow the phenomenon at the moment of totality and avoids unnecessary travel.
PalmaOn August 12, 2026, the Balearic Islands will be one of the few places from which to contemplate a total solar eclipse. But it won't be enough to find yourself on the right island: the phenomenon will practically coincide with sunset and any building, tree or mountain that blocks the western horizon may prevent you from seeing its most spectacular moment.
To resolve this doubt, the Government and AstroMallorca have presented Horitzó Eclipse 2026, a free application that allows you to check if the totality will be visible from the exact point where you want to observe the eclipse.
The tool is available in Catalan, Spanish, English, and German and can be used from mobile phones, tablets, and computers. The user only needs to indicate the location by using the device's geolocation, entering the coordinates or selecting a point on the map. From there, the application calculates the main moments of the eclipse and indicates whether the maximum of the phenomenon will be visible from that spot.
How to know if a place is suitable
It is also possible to do a check without using the application. You just need to position yourself at the place from where you want to follow the eclipse, look west, and check that the Sun will be visible at the scheduled time. If it is hidden behind a building, a mountain, or any other obstacle, it is very likely that from that point the entirety cannot be contemplated.
Precisely for this reason, Horitzó Eclipse 2026 allows you to verify it in advance and avoid trips that could later turn out to be useless.
A few minutes that will decide everything
Totality will begin around 8:30 PM, with small differences depending on the island. In Menorca, it is expected to start around 8:30 PM; in Mallorca, between 8:30 PM and 8:33 PM, and in Ibiza and Formentera, between 8:32 PM and 8:34 PM.
Since the Sun will be very low on the horizon, a few degrees of obstruction can make the difference between seeing the eclipse or missing it.
The objective of the new tool is to facilitate this planning and contribute to reducing last-minute trips to the same observation points, in addition to the possible mobility and safety incidents that may occur on a day that is expected to be very crowded.
