A dozen people were poisoned in the Balearic Islands after taking a dietary supplement.
People who are admitted to the hospital have hypercalcemia with kidney failure
PalmA batch of a high-dose vitamin D supplement has led to more than a dozen admissions in the Balearic Islands for hypercalcemia with kidney failure. The Public Health Food Safety Service has activated an alert for the presence of excess vitamin D due to a suspected formulation error in the product Advanced Vitamin x 90 capsules, batch 251268, branded by Erix Elit Sport Nutrition, marketed as a dietary supplement and initially distributed in the Balearic Islands.
According to the Ministry of Health, Food Safety has carried out an inspection at the headquarters of the distributor of this product, taking samples and immobilizing all existing products. This supplement appears to be the cause of more than a dozen admissions to public hospitals in the Balearic Islands during the months of May and June for acute kidney failure, hypercalcemia, and high blood levels of vitamin D.
According to the details, these poisonings have been suffered by healthy people, who consumed multivitamin products purchased online, without pharmaceutical supervision. The Epidemiology Service of the Ministry of Health, for its part, has activated a second alert in the health sector in order to increase surveillance for new possible cases in both public and private hospitals.
After learning of the case, the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) has issued a national alert with the aim of verifying the withdrawal of the affected products from all marketing channels, including recommendations for people who may have the affected products at home.
