PalmaTerraferida and Menys Turisme, Més Vida have demanded that the future delegate of the Spanish government in the Balearic Islands, Pere Joan Pons, carry out and make public the investigation into the police charges that took place after the demonstration against tourist overcrowding on July 26 in Palma. The two organizations made the request this Thursday, after learning that Pons will replace Alfonso Rodríguez, who announced on Tuesday that he was leaving the position to focus on his candidacy for mayor of Calvià.

“Welcome. Will you be able to finish the report that your predecessor says he started regarding the police charges of July 26th? Never in 50 years of demonstrations in defense of the territory had there been any charge or provocation. What does the repression of this summer respond to?”, Terraferida has posed through social media.

In the same vein, one of the spokespersons for Less Tourism, More Life, Jaume Pujol, has explained that they are conveying to the new delegate the same demands as to his predecessor: “That he assume his responsibilities and move the investigation forward”.

Pujol reproached Rodríguez for not having assumed responsibilities for police charges he considers "very serious" and which, as he remarked, left dozens injured. "He has not assumed responsibilities nor has he made those who should have done so assume them," he stated.

More than two months without knowing the report

The platform already publicly denounced on Tuesday that Rodríguez left the position without having reported on the results of the investigation. The day after the demonstration on July 26, the delegate called a press conference to announce that he had asked the superior chief of the National Police in the Balearic Islands, José Antonio Puebla, to prepare "with rigor and brevity" a report to clarify what had motivated the police charges, which he himself described as "violent and excessive".

More than two months after that announcement, the entities assure that they still have not been able to see the report. Pujol has lamented this lack of information and considered that "the PSOE is letting time pass so that people forget what happened".

The demonstration on July 26th brought together tens of thousands of people in Palma to protest against tourist overcrowding and the consequences of the tourism model on the territory and living conditions in the Islands. After the mobilization, police charges occurred, which have prompted complaints from the organizing organizations.

About twenty people are considering reporting the assaults

Furthermore, about twenty people got in touch during the month of August with Alerta Solidària and Menys Turisme, Més Vida to report to the courts the alleged assaults they suffered during the demonstration.

For the moment, however, these complaints have not yet been filed. Pujol has assured that the platform will continue to work so that the legal actions move forward and has justified this path due to the lack of trust in political leaders. “We will do everything possible for the complaints to move forward, because we cannot trust the political leaders,” he concluded.
