Environmental organizations oppose the fisheries management plan for the bays of Pollença and Alcudia.

They demand the maintenance of the mussola as a protected species and more studies on vulnerable habitats.

ARA Balears

PalmArrels Marines, Fundación Marilles, GOB-Mallorca, and Shark Med have filed objections to the draft decree of the management plan for professional fishing in the inland waters of the bays of Pollença and Alcúdia, with the aim of improving the conservation and co-management of this protected area.

The public comment period for the draft ended on September 17, at which time the entities presented their proposals after several joint meetings and consultations with experts.

Among their main demands, they highlight that the owl not be removed from the list of protected species, that the validity of underwater fishing licenses not be modified from one to three years, and that trawling in the Mollets area not be permitted without prior scientific studies. They also demand more research on species and habitats of high ecological value, such as gorgonians.

Another central point is the need to strengthen the role of the Co-management Commission. The organizations believe that this should have been the basis of the plan from the beginning, with the participation of conservation organizations, and that it should have real decision-making capacity beyond a simple advisory role.

Finally, the organizations expressed their willingness to collaborate on the shared management of fisheries in the bays of Pollença and Alcudia, and highlighted the importance of basing conservation policies on scientific knowledge and cooperation between the Administration, the fishing sector, and conservationists.
